Under the gi, you should wear comfortable athletic wear, such as a rash guard/fitted t-shirt and fitted shorts. If you’re attending a no-gi or wrestling class (see class schedule), wear snug-fitting athletic wear, like a rash guard and grappling shorts.

Are these classes safe? Will I get injured?

  • While minor injuries like bruises and strains are possible, our safety measures, supervision and responsible instruction help minimize risks. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu doesn’t involve striking, so there’s no punching or kicking. It’s also important to listen to your instructor and make sure you’re executing techniques correctly, and always communicate with your training partners and tap out when necessary to avoid unnecessary injuries.

Can I train in BJJ if I have a pre-existing injury or medical condition?

  • It depends on the nature of the injury or condition. Consult with your doctor and inform your instructor about any health concerns. This will help your instructor provide guidance on modifications and help you stay safe during training. In many cases, BJJ can be adapted to accommodate various physical limitations.

Is there a code of conduct or etiquette in BJJ?

  • Our students follow Gracie Barra rules and etiquette standards, such as bowing before entering and leaving the mat, showing respect to instructors and training partners and maintaining good hygiene. Our class etiquette guidelines are posted on the wall, so all students are aligned with Gracie Barra’s expectations.

Is sparring (rolling) mandatory? How does it work?

  • Sparring is a crucial aspect of BJJ, but it’s not mandatory for everyone, especially beginners. Our instructors understand that some students may need time to build confidence and skills before engaging in sparring. It’s typically introduced gradually as students progress in their training. Remember, there’s no striking in BJJ (punching or kicking).

How do I find a reputable BJJ academy?

  • You found it! Gracie Barra Conroe is part of the world-renowned Gracie Barra organization, with over 1,000 schools worldwide. This affiliation means we follow strict standards, and our classes follow a strategically designed, age- and level-appropriate curriculum. Every year, our instructors are background checked and CPR certified. Our lead instructor is a second-degree blackbelt and is required to complete an Instructor Certification Program (ICP) each year. This ensures he’s up to date and well versed in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instruction, including safety, techniques, Gracie Barra values and methods and more.
